Happy Halloween from Adventure Worlds Press

They say that no news is good news. They also say that there’s no such thing as bad press. We’re not sure who THEY are (we’re not even that sure if the those sayings are all that accurate).
What we do know is that the AWP authors are hard at work on their latest projects. Not that we have much to share about them.

We made an update about what we’re working on in our last post and we don’t want to just repeat ourselves. You can check it out for more details.

cover-finalOne thing that we are sure about is that we here at AWP love Halloween. This spooky, scary time is perfect for reading a good horror book like Christian Laforet’s The Space Between Houses, or a dark sci-fi story like those found in No Light Tomorrow.

We would love to try and convince you that all our books are perfect for Halloween, but while we think you’d enjoy them no matter when you read them, Brittni Brinn’s post apocalyptic Patch Project books and Ben Van Dongen’s cyber punk inspired Synthetic Albatross series just aren’t scary enough. Not in the traditional sense.

Either way, we just wanted to say that we hope everyone who takes the time to check out this website (and hopefully our books) has a Happy Halloween.80367398_10156568917196389_1550900823590961152_o

No doubt Christian will be spending his evening taking his little ones out trick-or-treating. Brittni will probably be handing out candy to the neighbourhood children. And Ben will be in the basement, hiding from the ghost that he accidentally summoned last Halloween.

Keep an eye out for some future updates on what new books will be coming out in 2022, and stay spooky!

Fall into AWP!

As the leaves change colour, the days get cooler and the nights come earlier, two of AWP’s authors (Ben Van Dongen and Christian Laforet) gear up for a trio of events.

Starting next week, on Devil’s Night (or, as the nearby city of Detroit tried to rename it some years back, Angel’s Night) Ben and Christian will be accompanying author David Nickle for an evening of scary readings at Biblioasis bookstore. The event, suitably called Who’s Afraid of the Dark? will be held at 7pm on October 30th

Trick or Treat

By Edele Winnie

“You’re going to have contact.” Marge swirled her pale hands over the crystal ball one more time. “Tomorrow.” She looked up at Loretta. “Halloween.”

Loretta’s legs began to quiver and she swallowed hard. “Thank you Marge.”

Marge smiled. She was not some artful gypsy but rather the stretch and strength exercise class instructor for the senior’s home where they both lived.

I’m going to have contact. Lortetta could not stop thinking about it at dinner that night, about her beloved husband Leroy, dead twenty-two years now. How she’d missed him. She’d been in a strange state of late- feeling isolated and alone, even though she’d lived in the senior’s home for the past seven years. She was no longer connecting with the others, staying in her room more, listening to sad music and remembering. The nurses had decided it was depression and added a little something to her daily barrel of drugs but it hadn’t changed anything. So Marge and the cane gang had decided to take matters into their own hands and cheer Loretta up. Continue reading

Spider-man vs. Dracula

Spider-man and Dracula stepped off the porch.

“What did she give us? I can’t see.” Dave pulled his Spider-man mask to adjust the eye holes.

“Take your stupid mask off, we’re not even at the door anymore.” Twin lines of spit dribbled down Rob’s chin from where his plastic fangs poked out past his lips.

Dave shook his head emphatically. “Sorry dude, with great power comes great responsibility.”

Rob raised his arms and looked around with exaggerated movements. “There aren’t even anymore house on this street.”

Behind them, two Batmans, a Transformer and Princess Bubblegum ran up to the steps.

The pair walked to the edge of the sidewalk and stopped.

“Where to now?” Rob glanced to where the street ended at a large woods, then back up the newly built road. Only one house was finished on their path back out, the owners opting to move in after Halloween. There were three muddy pits dug for future houses, but no other prospects for candy.

“This area’s tapped out. We can check out the action on the other side of the bush.” Dave slung his pillowcase over his shoulder.

“I don’t want to go all the way around. It’s already getting dark; by the time we get there all the candy’ll be gone.” Rob wiped his chin, taking off some of the white makeup. “We’ve got a lot already man.”

“Blasphemy!” Dave made his best Spidy pose, almost knocking over Princess Bubblegum, who was trying to get to the sidewalk. He adjusted his mask again. “Sorry kid.” He shifted the sack and moved out of the way of the other kids. “This is the last year we’re gonna get to go trick-or-treating. I’m not going home until we’ve knocked on every door in town.”Peering out of the one hole he managed to align with his eyes, he pointed at the mass of bare trees separating the neighbourhood from the older ones on the other side. “Let’s just cut through the woods.” Continue reading
